The iconic Council House has undergone refurbishment to both modernise the building and ensure public safety with renovation and redecoration of public areas, refurbishment of heritage items and external works to the Council House’s portico ceiling.

2022 marks the 160th anniversary of Birmingham’s collection being established at the Museum and Arts Gallery. It has received a grant from the Arts Council England to carry out modernisation works that include repairs to the fabric of the building, upgrading of the heating, improving physical access and protecting collections in transit with the replacement of lifts.
